Ransäter also boasts one of the most impressive local heritage centres. Around the old farmhouse the local heritage association has built up an entire village, including a flax-dressing house, inn, bakery, grocery store and smithy.
There are also museums dedicated to farming, forestry, history, hunting and fishing, steelmaking and domestic scenes from different ages. Ransäter Hembygdsgård is well worth a visit at any time of the year.

Klik om de detailkaart van de omgeving te bekijkenBehind our house, at the other side of the river, you can see a tourist bicycle track (detailed map, click here). At the start of the last century there was regular rail traffic on the Nordmark Klarälven rail line. But now the line is closed, the rails have been removed and the railway has been asphalted over. Great, say those of you who want to explore the Värmland Klarävsbanan, or Klarälv line, as it is called today, is a fantastic cycling and rollerblading trail that runs from Munkfors all the way to Lake Kroppkärrsjön in Karlstad – 65 kilometres totally free of cars! Or 30 kilometres north, to Uddeholm.

Those who don’t want to cycle can walk instead. For instance, there is an eight-kilometre trail around Lake Vågsjön, the slightly longer Geijerleden trail, which starts at the local heritage centre in Ransäter, or the walk to Granhöjden with its spectacular views. Pack a thermos, some egg sandwiches, buy a map and off you go.

Autumn is the ideal time for those who want to stock up the larder for winter. You’ll find plenty of mushrooms and lingonberries just waiting to be picked in the forests around
Munkfors. A tour on horseback is enjoyable at any time of the year. Seeing the beautiful countryside from the back of a gentle Icelandic horse is a very special experience.

You can fish for grayling in the River Klarälven or rainbow trout in Skalltjärn mere. Sport fishermen have plenty of choice. There is skilful fly-fishing for game fish or silent reel fishing for perch, using fresh bait. Please remember to get a fishing permit.

The area around Ransberg manor house in Ransäter is typical Värmland countryside. There are nature trails, places to swim and many relics from the early days of steelmaking. You can explore the surroundings on foot or by canoe.
